Great interview! My version of minimalism is closer to Joushuas, what he says about kids creating clutter is true. But that what life is for a lot of families, the difference is how you decide to deal with it and how you decide to live your life. This interview really makes me want to read the e-book :-)

Thank you helping to clarify my own thoughts on a minimalist approach to life. Joshua's way of thinking certainly illuminates my own, and helps me understand why I live in trailer/caravan and put up with all the complications of surviving in a materialist society that result from my choice of lifestyle!

I would love to be able to live out of a backpack, but mobility and medical issues make that impossible, but my feet are just as itchy as yours and I wish you health to continue your chosen lifestyle as long as possible! ;o)

Hey man can you delete my comment? I didn't really want to be telling you how to think. Now how do I get an embarrassed emoticon in here?

I'll rewrite my thoughts in a friendlier way.

Excellent! "Rational minimalism." Perfect.

"...many people were sure they would never become a “minimalist,” yet they loved the simplistic principles of minimalism." This describes me perfectly. The older I get the more I realize what's really important and what I want to focus my life on...the other stuff becomes frustrating and distracting. Minimalism for me may be different than minimalism for the next person but we are all looking for a similar goal.

Love this post, and I'll be checking out the e-book.

Now it's back to lurk-dom! :-)

Exactly! I love how this article brought out some comments from people who don't normally speak up. Joshua has such a different approach than I, doesn't he? And yet it's so similar. We're all rationalizing minimalism in our own way.

Thanks for the people who are checking out the book, and even buying it! I'm so honored that you enjoyed the interview, and that such great publishing is coming out of our community.

I'm also after Rational Minimalism. I have removed the unnecessary. It could be a start but since i'm not living alone i also have to consider others needs. With Rational Minimalism it's also much easier to lead others on the path of become minimalist!

I love hearing the definition of Rational Minimalism. This is exactly what I am aiming for in my own life, as I try out the Minimalist Experiment.

I'm not only going to focus on getting rid of stuff, though I am starting there. I plan to go through every aspect of my life: stuff, activities, memberships, associates, online, etc.

I want the ability to focus on my priorities, not having to take care of urgent/unimportant tasks.

"...the process of beginning minimalist forces you to identify your values. You can’t remove the nonessentials until you begin to identify the essentials." - Wow. I've never heard it said so well.

That is exactly what I have been discovering during the process of decluttering my life. I spent so much time on things that gave no value to my life, just to avoid dealing with all of the mess. My family and I have been decluttering our home over the last 8 weeks, and it's like a weight has been lifted from our shoulders. We talk more, share more, and generally get along better. And this is only the beginning.

Now it's like I have given myself permission to focus on building the kind of life I want. I now have a 5x8 "studio" space in my kitchen where I can draw and paint. Being an artist is my lifelong dream, but until I made room for it in my life, a dream was all it was going to be.

Joshua, I'm going to take a look at that book now. Great interview!
